Chapter Eleven

Aw, shit. Adam knew the second he lost her. The way her fingers twitched and her eyes got squinty, those things told him he'd pushed way too far this time. Seducing her, that had forced her out of her comfort zone. But announcing she loved him…

He'd blown it. Big time.

Why couldn't he keep his damn mouth shut? He kept screwing up with her because getting it right had never mattered this much before. He'd never needed to win over a woman. Never loved a woman. No one but her.

The waitress stopped by to refill Adam's coffee and replace Mel's empty glass of root beer with a fresh one. Adam noticed her peripherally, but he refused to take his eyes off Mel. She was staring right back at him, her expression defiant and her hands clasped on the table. The waitress asked, in a hesitant voice, if they needed anything else. Adam glanced at her and muttered, "No, thank you."

Once the waitress had gone, he reached out to lay a hand over Mel's. "Please talk to me."

"Talk?" She arched her eyebrows. "You seem to prefer dictating to me. First, you tell me I want you. Then, you tell me I can't keep my hands off you. And now, you have the gall to tell me I'm in love with you."

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said it." He curled his hand around hers, heartened by a slight softening of her expression. "The fact is, I've been in love with you for a long time."

"In love with me? I don't understand, you never acted like you…felt that way."

How the hell could he explain it? Probably couldn't, but he'd waded too far in to scramble back out. No choice but to dive into the depths. "I didn't realize how I felt until it was too late. You were already with Devon, and I wouldn't get in the way of that. I may be a player, but I don't steal other guys' girlfriends."

"You said you've felt this way for a long time."

"Two years seemed like forever. Two years of wanting you and not knowing if you felt the same way, wondering if Devon wasn't in the picture…" He shrugged. "Maybe you'd pick me."

She sighed, bowing her head briefly. "What am I supposed to say? You didn't tell me any of this until tonight—and you were sleeping around while you claim to have been in love with me."

He straightened, and despite the nausea rising in his stomach, he told her the truth. "You're wrong. One of us went celibate, but it isn't you. It's me."

She went stock-still, not blinking, then glanced away. When she looked him in the eye again, her expression had turned incredulous. "How long?"

Adam didn't ask what she meant, because he knew. "I've only had sex three times in the past two years, and not at all in the past year. I tried to, uh, get back in the game but it didn't work. I kept thinking about you, so I gave up on sex.
